Hi to all on a day that is just too nice to be inside dealing with computers when the surf is calling from the other side of the dune,

A client of mine is getting errors and general protection faults when doing object edits. The edits are automated by a Mapbasic program to do things like erase overlaps or split a polygon with a line. In the old days the program did these same things using custom routines, but now it basically just calls standard MapInfo commands and cleans up afterwards. The most common error as I understand it is "Unable to Allocate Memory" when doing a object split or overlay.

They have done a region check and it reports no problems.

They have just upgraded some of their system and introduced more security, and they are getting General protection faults. They have introduced a couple of new changes to their system that seem to be responsible for the problems.

The data is stored on a central server, and while the program has worked fine using a windows NT server, it has crashed often since they switched to XP. Version 7.5 has not helped.

They also can possibly avoid the problem by putting the data onto a local machine and working locally, but I have had conflicting reports on this.

So, enough evidence to suggest it is a network and/or XP problem, but of course I would like to help them more if I can rather than give the standard help desk answer of "Its a microsoft problem". Can anyone suggest likely causes or even some useful questions to ask.

I believe they are using roaming profiles, and I think their user directories are on the server as well. My most favoured theory is that the network is somehow too slow and MapInfo can't find something it is writing to their user directory in time for its next process.
