Ian, This does dot really answer your question (because I haven't used MI or MapX with MySQL) but it may also be worth considering a PostGIS database. If you're unfamiliar, PostGIS 'adds support for geographic objects to the PostgreSQL object-relational database'. PostGIS and PostgreSQL are both open source. PostGIS provides a better implementation of the OpenGIS Simple Features Specification for SQL than MySQL currently does in 4.1 and therefore provides better functionality.
