After further investigation it seems as though I may have answered my own question.  
We were treating the coordinate values for the text object as the values of the 
bounding rectangle for the text.  It would now seem that we misinterpreted what the 
coordinates mean.  If we re-generate the coordinates from our application using the 
principle that the four coordinates follow:

x1 = Origin X
y1 = Origin Y
x2 = Text length
y2 = Text height

After regenerating the MID/MIF file we finally see the text appear as expected.  The 
lesson here is that the coordinates for text in MID/MIF represents origin, length, and 
height and not the MBR.
