We have a local survey & engineering firm that would like to assist us in setting standards for electronic submissions to the township. Part of that spec will be designed such that utility plans, site plans and subdivisions will have a GIS component. We are not having much luck currently with dxf imports. Since AutoCAD is the standard software for drafting, and GIS packages vary, we feel requiring a GIS format is burdensome to the engineer, but perhaps there is a feature in AutoCAD I do not know about that would enable a GIS export out. My requests for the list are:
For anyone who already has such specifications and standards, would you send those along to me, if relatively short, copy and paste them into an email to the list so all may see. Any suggestions from anyone up on dxf/MI/FME compatibility? I have noodled some with DXFs and MI. We have AutoCAD lite 2000i to use as a viewer and to convert .DWGs to .DXFs. We don't want to edit or create drawings here. We can open drawings in AutoCAD Lite, but I have not had much luck when getting .dwgs or .dxfs from engineering firms to lay into our maps as an import. If YOU had a firm offering to set it up , how would you want it? I am sure their interest is to be able to offer conformance to our submission standards, since they generated them, thus giving them an edge over other firms. In the 6 years I have been doing GIS, I have had one set of subdivision plans that dropped into place with no problems, so I know its possible. The draftsman for that firm has moved on and they didn't know what was done (probably why he found a bigger better deal). Therefore, I believe what I seek is possible- a dxf/dwg to import into MI that will land in place in a particular, specified projection.
