the post from David Cauley is excellent (and right on the money). I deal more with converting autocad drawings to illustration programs, and would offer one additional point (virtually all of Davids points are equally applicable if you open autocad files in Illustrator, Draw, etc).
AutoCad and color - a nightmare. Autocad uses colors to define line type and width, and every drawing can have a different pen type list (as of a year ago, I do not know if the current version of autocad still does this). I have found that I must do one of two things: A) supply a pen list, or B) tell the autocad types to do everything in a single color (which is a single line width) - usually black.
