The other thing I've found is that some WMS (like the Microsoft ones in the list inside MI7.5 for example) often require you to be in a valid place on the map before they can successfully open. I've seen a similar error when opening the US maps from Mircosoft into a new mapper without specifying a location - then I opened up the sample US Zip boundaries that ship with MI and zoomed to an area of interest and the WMS works fine. The Dotted Eyes views of the UK seem better behaved and will default to national coverage if none is specified.
BTW this is the grooviest way of putting out maps I've seen in years.
