Good point - just now, I only need to make the selection in order to change
the symbol, which I don't think would be an issue. But if I do need to save
the subset later...I'll look into it.

You can run that query and get the results of the sales prospects within a 
region and then using the "invert selection" tool (white arrow with black 
box around it) should give you the sales prospects outside that region. 
I'm not sure how intersects are dealt with though ... someone else might 
have a better answer.
