Hi all,
Ok this morning I downloaded and tried Borland's C#Builder with some
of the samples that ship with the King Beta. I just used the built in
project conversion that is included with C#Builder when you do a File ->
Open Project. You have to change a few of the paths on the references but
then it works and compiles just fine.
I haven't tested many of the samples because I just wanted to be
able to see if the references worked using C#Builder. They do.
So this would be a much cheaper alternative environment to learn
.Net in. Sharpdevelop the open source editor had so many problems just
trying to get it to compile I eventually gave up. I referenced in the
MapInfo.CoreEngine into my project in Sharpdevelop and it would crash and
corrupt the project every time I did that. Apparently this is on
SharpDevelop's side because it works fine in C#Builder and I would assume it
works in Visual Studio as that is what it was written in.
I used the free version of C#Builder that Uffe posted a link to this
morning. You will have to give Borland a metric ton of personal data to be
able to get a pass to download it. Make sure the e-mail address you give
them is valid because your license key gets e-mailed to you. Also on the
same download page is an update for C#Builder. Be sure to download and
install it also as it contains some significant bug fixes for C#Builder.
That's about all the info I have on it now, but that should answer
the question of where we can learn .Net cheaply for doing apps with
MapInfo's .Net version.
If any of you start using this C#Builder I would really appreciate
you posting back your experiences with it also, so we stay up to date on any
problems we might encounter while using it.
Thanks,
Andy

If you don't mind considering other langauges than VB, then there are:
Sharpdevelop (open source project):
http://www.icsharpcode.net/OpenSource/SD/Default.aspx
C#Builder (Borland):
http://www.borland.com/csharpbuilder/personal/index.html
The free download version doesn't allow commercial development, but the
70$ pay-for-version may do so (I'm not sure).
MapInfo Corp. may actually include sample code as C# instead of VB,
since C# is a sort of default langauge on the .NET platform. Also
remember that VB.NET is a lot different from VB6.
Kind regards
