Mike,

The first desision is whether to choose a tablet PC sytems or one of the the
more portable Pocket PC systems.

Most of our GBM Mobile customers started out thinking they needed tablets
because they wanted the bigger screens, but in the long term the portability
and robustness of the Pocket PC wins out. The secret is getting an
application that is properly optimised for the Pocket PC screen size.

Have a look at some of the MapInfo based mobile mapping systems such as GBM
Mobile at www.geobasemap.com. It would be pretty easy to upload field
observations from there into your access applicaiton. The alternative is a
Tablet based MapX system like our GBM Mapping product, but have a good look
at the Pocket PC first.

Consumer level Pocket PC devices like the iPAQ cost around 20% of price of a
tablet PC. Ruggardised units, like the new Pocket PC 2003 variant of the
Trimble Recon are a bit more expensive, but still much cheaper than the
tablets.

Subject: MI-L field hardware and software

Hey folks,

My boss has decided it is time, for the field staff, to start using some
sort of tablet to record information. The information collected is to
be exported to the office access databases. The field staff use Garmin
and Trimble GPS units now. So we would like something that can connect
with them. Of course, cost is a consideration.

Any suggestions or comments on what to get or what to stay away from?
