Tim,
Perhaps you've switched the Northings and Eastings. If so, then the East
Africa Belts "G" and "H" may be what you're looking for.
Central Meridians are ("G") 32 30'E and ("H") 37 30'E, False Easting of
both are 400,000 meters and False Easting of both can be 3,500,000 meters
or 4,500,000 meters. Both Belts have a scale factor at orign of 0.9995
Of course, the ellipsoid of reference is the Clarke 1880 (Modified) where a
= 6,378,249.145 and e^2 = 0.0068034810172
The datum can be either Arc 50 or Arc 60, depending on your source data's
date of origin. If the above doesn't help, try looking up articles by Hugh
Rainsford; he worked there some 50 years ago and wrote extensively on
Uganda Triangulation work in which he was involved.

Sensing," June 2003 available in a pdf file from

Hello Listers,
I have been given a table of GPS points taken in Uganda. The easting
values
range from 3,005,351 to 3,409,930 and the northings range from 5,219 to
243,166. Unfortunately there is no metadata accompanying this. Would
anyone be familiar enough with the area to recognize the coordinate system?
I tried UTM 36 which looked good for the northings but not so for the
eastings.
Thx,
Tim
