There are a number of tools and utilities on the Directions Magazine website that extend MapInfo Professional's native capability and address it's inherent "problems." Feel free to peruse and download those tools that apply to your situation. One that might make particular sense is the KGM Utility Bundle from Kevin Mahoney (kgmv4-11.exe) - I believe it includes a Sort Table utility.
On a side note, I am often dismayed at how quickly ArcUsers dismiss MapInfo as unable to perform some type of analysis, or note that it is devoid of some capability. While I would never wish the horror of reading the MapInfo User's Manual on anyone, perhaps users of other software packages should consider doing so.
