Ian Johnson also put out a decent basic MapInfo book written for
technologically deficient archaeologists. Unfortunately it is as old as
the artefacts being mapped, and I do not know if a more recent one has been
done since.

The best books for MapInfo for business analysis were written by Angela
Whitener. The best one for MapInfo as applied to the Natural Sciences is
Ian Johnson's "Understanding MapInfo." Yes, these are a bit old, but a lot
of the techniques haven't changed. Another is Jacques Paris' "MI Bag O'
Tricks" which is full of goodies if you want to learn the ways of the
Power User. Amazon sells all but Jacques' (see
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1566901510/102-2077897-7256941?v=glance
).
It also appears that Meridian Geo and MapMart are flogging MapInfo
products through Amazon too these days;. hmm, clever guerrilla
marketing... but I digress. Here's Jacques' web site, but it doesn't seem
to be up today (www.paris-pc-gis.com.)
It's too bad the MapInfo market is so pitifully small that it can't
support even a small press and a coffee house of starving writers to churn
out current magazines, essays, novels, tomes and grimoires on using
MapInfo, but think of the character you'll build foraging for information
online! 'Cause the latest book on MapInfo is being written right here,
every day. Granted, the editing is lousy, and the stream-of-consciousness
format can be maddening when you're trying to find something, but hey,
welcome to MapInfo-L!
