Here's a hairy one.

The Appalachian Trail, which runs from Mt Katahdin in
Maine to Springer Mtn, GA is only 1,120 miles as the crow flies. With all
the switchbacks and ridgelines, the trail is far from anything like a
straight line or road system (thankfully). Actually it almost twice as
long, with an actual distance of 2,104 miles (ratio 1.879!!)

Takes about 5-6 months to do a thru hike, my feet ache just thinking about
it...

So what routes are not close to 1, then? Let's see... my commuter
route (short, and in a city) is 0.35mi / 0.265mi = 1.3. If I cut
through the alleys and parking lots, it goes down to 1.11, and
either way it's not very scenic. If I take the bike path along
the river (scenic) it goes up to 3.46. If I stop off at a pub
along the way, then the ratio becomes irrelevant.
