My company is investigating MapInfo's MapXtreme Java product. We were wondering if it had the features that would allow us to be successful in our project.
Areas of concern: 1. We need to create layers from data in our existing database, which is NOT a spatial database. Both point and vector data. There is a JDBC driver for our database. 2. Since we won't have the spatial database "contains" operator, we will need to perform "contains" checks for point features using the Java 2D Graphics library "contains". The area feature set in one layer would be polygons created from our database. The point feature sets in two separate layers would also be created from our database. 3. We will also be creating another layer containing polylines from a second database, which is not a spatial database. 4. We plan to have background layers of street data. It would reside in TAB files. There will be three "conceptual" layers, with different visibility limits depending on the scale. In actuality, the data comes from files for 5 to 10 different U.S. counties. Therefore there will be 15 to 30 "actual" layers. Our database DOES allow blobs that could store the Map Definition (.mdf) for the background data. 5. We will need to query attributes for a point feature. We have not been able to get the Map Manager to do that yet. 6. We will need to make some sort of remote procedure call to calculate the value of an attribute for a point feature. If you have had success using MapXtreme Java in one or more of these areas, I would love to hear about it. Or if you are aware of disqualifiers in any of these areas, that would be helpful as well.
