Hi Ian

We're trying to do large-scale vendor neutral deployments that can be
repeated for different organisations, possibly hosted on a server farm - most
people only need to SEE maps so WMS is an great way of putting maps out
across a network from one spot, based on a machine we can optimise for that
purpose. It also makes sure everyone sees the same map at the same time. And
most desktop clients will now interact with WMS.

It means we can give people a unified picture of the organisations mapping,
through the tools they are used to using. I think MapInfo/Oracle deployments
are simpler with big holdings of large-scale data than the SDE equivalent -
point is, it doesn't matter because the users interact with an OGC compiant
web service and if SDE/IMS is better we can replace the vendor mix and leave
the interface untouched.

(We will still have small numbers of read/edit users who need to interact
with vector and we'll do that with linked tables/SDE etc).

The point is - ESRI are making a big deal of how they are interoperable,
ArcExplorer doesn't seem to work that way and I'm trying to find out if its
us or them!

I'm confused. You have ArcExplorer, and you've deployed a WMS server using
MapXtreme Java 4.7. ArcExplorer cannont access the WMS layers you've
published using MapXtreme? When using ArcExplorer, are there other WMS
sites that exhibit the same behaviour? You'll have to forgive me as it's
early over here - and I'm not a coffee drinker.

Has anyone got this to work?

It sounds like a fantastic deployment route - especially on the sort of work
we do - and building WMS in MapXtreme Java 4.7 doesn't even require any code
- but from the ESRI website nobody can read OGC WMS from ArcExplorer and our
own experience it works er, 0 times. Is this because of the software or
because we don't know what we're doing?

Thanks
