MI-L Alpha characters in house number

Hello,
 
How does MapInfo handle alpha characters in the house number? For example,
how does MapInfo handle the address '123A Elm St'? Do alpha characters need
to be stripped out, or does MapInfo automatically ignore them? I haven't
found any clues in the documentation.
