Because the update was a special personal effort, not an official corporate
one is my guess. MapInfo isn't a soulless impersonal corporate entity;
there's a lot of creative individual effort that also turns the wheels.
I'd rather see an update or example escape quickly and simply through
MapInfo-L's channel rather than see it die trying because it's required to
go through the slower formal review process, documentation, etc. before
it's officially released.

If we want a more up-to-date set of examples and utilities, maybe *we*
should be the ones to build them. The source code for most of the MapInfo
ones is available in the /samples/mapbasic directory for those who have
MapBasic. Why not "adopt" a little MapBasic project whenever we're in a
lull in our day jobs and integrate these into a suite of "MapInfo-L
Utilities?"

These could be an integrated set of tools (like the famous, but now
out-of-date, KGM utilities) that would be useful in their own right, but
we should also include examples of coding techniques for new MapBasic
programmers. Keep each utility simple but useful, provide source code and
be liberal with comments, and use best practices for integrating them into
the current MapInfo environment.

Think of the fun we could have arguing over what "best practices" means?

Last I heard, he went to work for Oracle.
