Thanks to the respondents, Matt Carlson, Uffe Kousgaard, Ian Thomas and

The question was 'Is there a new ESRI vector data format, i.e. to replace
the SHP format?'

The answer seems to be 'No', but there are at least 2 other 'new-ish'
formats:-

* The geodatabase (personal and multi-user)

* SDC (Smart Data Compression)

The geodatabase uses commercial RDBMS to store all data (attribute, spatial
and topological). However the ESRI web site does suggest the geodatabase can
be implemented in a file based system such as SHP. In this instance
'geodatabase' appears to be used to refer to the geodata management system
rather than the storage format.

SDC seems to be confined to specific application areas such as it's Business
Map application and for routing and geocoding.

Neither seems to be a replacement as such for the SHP file.

Keith Campbell
