Tim:
Lets assume that your raster data represent a single continuous layer, then
there are three possibilities.

1. Generalize your raster data over broad areas to make overview layers, and
switch layers as you zoom in or out, e.g., satellite image -> SRTM -> Air
photo.

2. Compression. MrSID or ECW (free for smaller files). You loose a
little in detail but the images are 1/10 to 1/20 of the originals but still
have enough detail.

3. Tiling. I've been able to tile ~200 1:50,000 grey scale topo maps
and use them on a Celeron lap top without too much difficulty.

Patrick

Subject: MI-L Large raster maps

Hi List,

This goes back to a question I asked before, but just want to clear a
few things up.

I have loads of raster data (20GB). Can MapInfo handle a 20GB raster
image? If not, could it handle, say, 40 500Mb files?
I'm still trying to find out some information about efficient methods of
using lots of raster data with MapInfo.

Cheers

Tim Smith
