the location of these files is configurable.

from version 6.5 upwards the custom symbols directory (and others like graphing and
thematic templates) are placed in the user profile (c:\documents and settings....) by
default, rather than in the install directory as previously.
from version 7 upwards the location of these files could then be controlled by using a
mode.ini file at install (see user manual for more details although you're also
welcome to ask me...). this allows you, for example to put these directories into the
install directory (available to all users) or into per user or per machine profiles.
there are advantages/ disadvantages to all of these. [a consideration for us was the
sheer size of downloading remote profiles across networks that contain many user
files, so we use the old default of install directory.]
i'm interested in other people's course of action on this?

it is possible to end up with several of these directories if previous installs have
not been cleaned up which may have caused the confusion of locations for some.

I found another CustSymb folder on my computer. Running Windows 2000 and
MapInfo 7.0.
If I add new symbols or change them here it works.

Subject: MI-L Custom Symbols Didn't Appear

I wanted to use my custom bitmap as symbols. I followed what the manual
suggested, i.e. saved the symbol as bitmap in the CUSTSYMB directory. I
reloaded it and even closed the session and opened MapInfo again, the symbol
just didn't appear from the font list.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
