You say you saved the thematic map, I assume that you saved the workspace after creating the map, as opposed to saving the legend as a template under the modify Thematic Map dialogue.... If you do a lot of thematic maps get to know this feature!
When you save a workspace, it also saves thematic maps, selections, SQL statements and the queries they generate, custom labels, the contents of the Cosmetic layer, units, preferences, session projection, and probably one or more things I have forgotten, oh yeah text applied to a layout window and symbols placed when using Find (Control F). As a rule of thumb, if it can't live in a table, it's gotta live in a workspace. So, if you did any of that after you saved the thematic the first time, then you triggered the question to save the workspace when you closed the session. Notice that if you close a mapper with these sorts of objects in them, you are prompted to save the workspace, even though you have not closed any tables, or exited the program. As a rule, I am sure to discard the cosmetic layer and custom labels, close selection and queryN tables, and closing any other tables that I may have opened that I do not INTEND to open with the workspace, prior to saving the workspace. And conversely, If I have a lot of work sitting on a cosmetic layer, and a specially placed labels, I do save that as a workspace. While speaking about thematics, never close the underlying table or , in layer control, highlight the thematic "sub layer" and hit remove, and then save the workspace when prompted - AS David Spade said in the SNL skit "Bah Bye". TO keep the table open, but not see the thematic shading, just uncheck the thematic sub layer to remove the thematic display without destroying the map. We all have been trained, more or less, to save anything anytime we are asked, but with workspaces, you may want to discard changes to the workspace unless you are specifically sure you need to save, else it drags everything around with it. IMHO, if there are things about the workspace you want to change, spend time specifically changing those features, rather then on a whim on the fly. As to your problem saving workspaces to the net, I have encountered this and discovered the workspace lived in someone's folder that I did not have rights to edit. If all else fails in this situation, save the workspace to your local hard drive until you figure it out, this is also a good Idea to keep special ones "safe". Did you build the thematic on a selection/query? I've had problems saving workspaces to the network, after having built thematics on a selection. If this is the case in your situation, your best bet would be to save that selection into a new table. Select the objects in the mapper (or rows in a browser), and do a File > Save Copy As. Then open that table into your mapper and run the thematic on that layer. Let me know if that clears up your issue. -John The Schwan Food Company -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, July 23, 2004 5:22 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: MI-L Question about Thematic Maps I have added a thematic map to an existing workspace and corresponding legend. I saved it to the workspace, but when I close it, it tells me that there is still something to be saved. Am I meant to be able to save the thematic version? Sheri L.
