I think you should try saving it as a MapInfo tab

Did that solve your problem? I had earlier same error message though in different 
situation. I was about to convert polylines to points in Vertical Mapper and could�t 
do that because of error 503. Anyway you could try save your file to Microsoft Access 
Database (in save copy as-catalogue choose save as type:...) and retry with this new 
copy. That didn�t solve problem in my case, but anyway dropped error message value to 
306!
