Thanks to Chris Royals and Mike Regan who both reminded me that custom 
symbols go in the user's directory.  Mine happens to be 

C:\Documents and Settings\twior\Application 
Data\MapInfo\MapInfo\Professional\750\CustSymb

and it worked like a charm.  I seem to rember reading about this on the 
list, but I guess my mind is more on the weekend than green firetrucks and 
blue ambulances.
