Hi Cinda,

Unfortunately, our company has been back and forth with my MI distributed
and MI Canada, and there is no way to go about fixing this limitation unless
you have Windows 98 and installed the win98 printer driver for your plotter.
We have setup our hard drive with double OS boot capibilities to allow us to
work in Win2000 or greater and be able to print from the win98 boot portion
of the hard drive. You can print large format plots off on win2000 or XP buy
setting the print quality to fast or low.

When printing to a PDF (Adobe Distiller) the restriction still applies,
unless you set your output resolution less than 1200 dpi. I am a big MI fan
but this is one of the most annoying problems MI has ever had. Corporate MI
(CANADA) said they would look into fixing this problem for MI version < 7.5,
but I have not found any patch on there site that will rectify the problem,
and funny thing is the software is supposed to be compatible with WinXP.

Now!, they ensured us that this problem would be looked at when a new relase
of MI (8.0) comes into circulation.

Sorry for the rant,

Subject: MI-L MapInfo and OS print limitations vs ArcView?

MapInfo tech support has confirmed what a client recently stated: MapInfo
has a hard wired printing limitation of 28,000 pixels per any row or
column. Tech support told me that MapInfo imposes this limitation in order
to keep the software compatible with Microsoft's Windows 98 or lower
operating systems.

The same client says they resort to using ArcView 3.2 which does not have
these limitations.

Work-arounds suggested are printing to PDF, EPS or making a WMF. I have
never had success printing very large maps to PDF. Can anyone comment on
the EPS or WMF route? (or pdf for that matter...)

Thanks in advance,

Cinda Graubard
