Thanks Russell,

This works great! When I took MapInfo back in college, the version we had
had so many bugs and problems the focus seemed to get shifted to ESRI stuff.
Now that I know how, it is much easier and more efficient in MapInfo.
ArcGIS couldn't handle this job when I tried to create a grid for some
contours in my thesis (I let it churn away over night and it crashed in the
morning everytime). MapInfo just did it in under 5 minutes. I Wonder what
the difference is in how they handle the process, but I'll leave that up to
ESRI and MapInfo and the like.

I only wanted it to add a nice backdrop to some maps, but now that I see how
well MapInfo handles it, maybe I'll revisit my thesis and try some real
analysis....when I have the time that is.

Thanks for the help.

Hi,

by chance i was looking at the source code for the Grid tools mbx last
night, it is limited to to creating grids from equidistant rows and columns
of points. to grid spatially variable points like contours/ spot heights
you need to interpolate a grid. to do this you need to create a thematic
grid map. All the Mapinfo gridding tools are under teh Map>>create thematic
map menu....click on the option for a grid and away you go...

As a user of VM/MiG, gridanalyst and Esri offerings for many many years
now (as well as some VERY expensive oil sector kit) i can happily say that
VM, GA (and Mig) are surprisingly good value and easy to use (despite teh
odd bug), the arc suite less so, the only thing missing is a fault gridding
routine (hint hint)

If you want to do gridding 'for free' beyond what mapinfo can offer then the
free GMT tools are worth a look..they take some setting up but can give
100k oil sector kit a run for its money...!
