Dan i have uploaded one of my old tools for doing this to the directionsmag website. Its not polished and is fairly slow with big datasets (old code no whizzy 'function' updates) , but should do as you need.

I don't have an understanding of MapBasic, so is there a way of easily creating a 1 km grid from each point which has all the attributes of that point?
