There has been a beta period, but not a public beta, only a private beta for selected users or partners. I'm not sure what the criteria for this selection were though.
I have also been told that there will be a public beta of the upcoming MapInfo Pro .NET or whatever it is going to be called (don't expect it to be called MapInfo 8.0, eventhough this is what we all have refering to during the last year or so.
