Hi All!

In february 2000, NASA flew a special shuttle mission to generate a
near-global digital elevation model (DEM) of the Earth using radar
interferometry. (see
http://spatialnews.geocomm.com/features/srtm_jan2002/)

Amazingly enough, the complete results are freely available for download
from
ftp://edcsgs9.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/srtm/
The data is segmented into one degree lat/lon chunks, with a planar
resolution of about 30 m.
The data are pretty raw, and should be treated with that knowledge, but
hey, it's free!

I only found out this the other day, and I have just downloaded data for
Sweden.
But I have not yet figured out how to put the data into MapInfo.
I have looked at it with Global Mapper which works perfectly. Perhaps I
can transform it from there.
Another tip (from this list) is to use the 3dem software from
http://www.visualizationsoftware.com/3dem.html

which apparently can convert the .hgt files into something MapInfo
understands.
This remains to be tested.

Hlsning/ Best regards Mats.E
