I have never heard that MapInfo as default supports KAP files, so maybe you need to 
install some special raster handler on your computer to make MapInfo understand this 
format.

both the *.kap and *.tab file(s) are located on a central file server.  It seems to 
work just fine from everyone else's wkstn, except for mine.

> have you moved the location of the .tab - i.e. is the .tab looking for
