Carlo, The files you download should also include a metadata file (*.met *.txt *.doc etc)
This meta file will or should give you the projection and datum/coordinate system that the files were created in. Using universal translator import them and specify the system stated in the metafile. Once imported into Mapinfo you can the "Save As" the file(s) and save them out to a new coordinate system if needed.
