Hi Robert! The circle you see is a new feature in MI Pro, it shows the snap radius, in your case 5 pixels. Very useful when snapping to proximate objects because you get a feeling for how much you need to zoom in in order to get the snap tolerance below the distance between the object.
But this is probably not the reason for the sluggishness you experience. My guess is that you have a map window with many layers, and lots of data in them. Let's say for instance a topographic map with a land cover layer, a number of line layers such as rivers, roads, railroads and a number of point and text layers on top. Such a map can easily engage dozens of layers. Now, in a map window all layers are snappable (=targets for the autosnap function) by default. This means that for any mouse movement, MapInfo has to drill down through all layers to check for possible snap targets. And this takes some time. Even worse, the base map may be on a remote drive which exacerbates the problem. Solution: In the layer control, switch off the snappability for all layers you don't explicitly need to snap to. That would be the third checkbox column from the left, the one with a star and a black arrow.
