mia culpa, excuse my sleepy transgression! a bit too early here (before 6am) to be right on top of important things like esri file types!

of course you are correct, the workspace equivalent is the apr ("arcview project") file in ArcView 3x. which, of course, does not translate into a MapInfo workspace in any way other than brute force (that I have found anyway.) another heads up, any colors applied in arcview via an avl ("arcview legend") file will have to be recreated in MapInfo as well (either manually or i believe there is at least one tool out there that attempts it automatically.)

Hello Cinda,

Actually ESRI PRJ's are projection files. The equivalent of a MapInfo
workspace is an APR in ArcView v3.x and MXD's for ArcGIS v8/9.x.

Other correspondents are correct, the UT doesn't used them and one needs to
specify the coordinate system/projection/datum manual for each SHP->TAB
translation.

the .shp file translation will use the required additional files and create the .tab, .map, .dat etc. note, however, that the .prj file is NOT a projection file, but a "project" file which is equivalent (more or less) to a MapInfo workspace. you will have to know the original projection and set it in UT.
