Hi All,

Just a side note, how would you deal with a situation where your map has
special fonts that only work with a license for your computer.

I had this problem earlier this year with a map I had to have a printer
reproduce. One of the symbols used was an ESRI font which would not work on
the Commercial Printer's computer because they didn't have the license for
ESRI software because they don't have any ESRI products. I would even send
them the fonts I used, but they would not work in the PDF and were
substituted with a font from his computers.

I was eventually resolved, but I had to change all of the symbols on my map
and trying it on a computer here without any GIS software licenses.

Any ideas to avoid this in the future (and I would like to use the symbols I
choose for the map).

Thanks,
Don Mitchell

Hi Elizabeth,

I'm presuming that by commercial printer you mean to get your poster printed
by litho printers?

Your best option would be to print a .pdf from your MapInfo Layout. Most
commercial printers should be able to accept a pdf.

There's a great freeware pdf printer called PDF995 and is available for
download at: www.pdf995.com Once you've downloaded the files, install them
on your computer, and you'll find a new printer in your printers list. Just
select that printer, set your page size, and away you go!

Your only problem may be if you've used out of the ordinary fonts in your
layout or map windows, in which case, you may want to put those onto a disc
as well when sending the file to the printers.

Hope that helps.

Thomas

Hi all,

What is the best way to get a MapInfo layout file to a commercial printer
(like Kinko's)?

I have to create a poster 3' x 4' made up of 14 maps, a bunch of legends and
whole lot of text.

I tried "save window as" tiffs (resolution 1200) for each of my maps, and
brought them into Quark. But the text on the maps and the legends were not
all that clear, and since I don't want to create huge files by increasing my
resolution (already some exceed 100 Mb), I thought I would just create my
poster in MapInfo.

How would I get a layout file to a commercial printer? Or am I going about
it all the wrong way, and there is some better way to do this?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Elizabeth Caponi
