Seems like a very interesting setup with a RAM disk and MapInfo.

I googled a bit for alternatives and found www.ramdisk.tk which seems to
work OK at least in the free version (max 64 MB). The Pro version is
only 14 USD, so I'll probably try that on a more complex setup, when I
get 2 GB in one of my machines in a couple of days.

I have not tested it throughly yet. If you get 2 GB RAM, your can
reserve 1.5 GB RAM for your MapInfo data.
