CAREFUL, folks.

Read the fine print.

Most of what's said is true (ie, there are some low-end developer tools
that bundle the right to distribute MSDE)

BUT....

<insert all the usual disclaimers and YMMV, etc etc>

a) the product is not free for anyone to use. You have to have
purchased a developer product at an appropriate level.
b) the product can only be used by the end user that you develop an
application for -- it can't be used for general use or for anything
other than your application -- ie it's a bundled, locked up runtime.
c) you are not entitled to distribute any of the necessary and useful
management tools with MSDE, such as Query Analyzer, SQL Enterprise
Manager, etc. etc. You can distribute OSQL, a command prompt (DOS for
us old fogies) utility. Even doing a backup or restore is awfully
tedious.

Hope this helps...
And keeps the software police away from your door.

Subject: MI-L Looking for Alternative MS SQL Server 2000

I heard that Microsoft offers a package for database management called
"MSDB" (?) that is similar to SQL Server, but can be downloaded for
free.
Does anyone know if this is true and where I can get it? And in
particular, will it work with MapXtreme 2004?
