Alistair, Yes pocket PC 2003 is the only way to go - especially with Bluetooth so flaky on 2002.
We have been delivering GBM Mobile (with the old MapX 5.0) quite successfully on Pocket PC2003 for over a year - although we did have to tweak our implementation for 2003. We have been running with MapX 5.5 since December - it is well set up for Pocket PC 2003 and has the raster image problems fixed (including ECW compression) - all works very well. I am not sure what your control button problem is - but we have not experienced any robustness problems since we moved PDA development from VB to C++ (we had memory leak problems with VB on Pocket PC - but MapX itself is sound). We don't have labelling problems with MapX mobile, provided we move whatever we want to label into the first column in the .tab file. And if labels are set properly in the geoset, we do get them to persist between sessions. But there are problems with geosets built using "send to mobile" in MI Pro. Poorly written PC geosets has been our only real support issue - frustrating to the point that we have been compelled to write our own Geoset validation utilities (existing customers - this is the Load Data Wizard that will ship shortly with V3). So do insist on a Pocket PC 2003 version - and MapX can deliver a robust end-user application provided it is programmed with the right degree of sophistication. We also, have started implementing customer solutions with .tab files linked to a SQL CE database on the PDA (supporting one-to-many relationships) and automatically uploading to PC database. I expect to see many of our existing customers move in this direction during 2005. Hi David, MapInfo have a product called MapXMobile - there are substantial references to it at the MapInfo-L archive at directionsmag: http://lists.directionsmag.com/discussion/search.php?f=7 Search subject and message bodies for all dates to get the best search result... Whilst you can develop it into an application yourself, a number of third party developers have taken it a step further with sophisticated applications linking back into SQL/Oracle databases. For an example see: http://www.rapidmap.com/Content/templates/product_data_capture_detail.asp?ar ticleid=61&zoneid=30 Also reference may be found at the following MapInfo site: http://extranet.mapinfo.com/products/Overview.cfm?productid=1661 A word of caution though, I bought five MapXMobile licenses 7 months ago and then when I had map setting problems (the maps would not show their preset label settings on the device and would lose their label settings when the PocketPC application was exited, despite these being set on the desktop PC previously). Finally a bod at MapInfo admitted that 'PocketPC 2003 is not a supported platform'. This, after you can no longer buy PocketPC 2002 devices?? I still have not had a satisfactory outcome from MapInfo and my users who really are mosquito killers, not GIS freaks, are left having to go into layer control on the devices and reset the maps each time they log into the application. Not to mention that the control buttons .dll seems to fall over requiring multiple I understand a new version is on the way, and Mapinfo have promised to provide me with a free upgrade for my 5 licenses so it's not all a bad as it may sound. Anyway, hope this helps!! Can someone give me more information about that? Thanks.
