Thanks all for your suggestions.  I ended up doing it by thematic
mapping, point density.  I originally had point data but was able to
aggregate it to polygons to theme by range.  Thanks again to those who
replied

I'm not sure if I understand your intent for "point density" correctly,
but Spatial Decisions (a MapInfo Partner form Australia) has the global
(except Europe & UK) distribution rights for a tool called HotSpot
Detective.  It is a tool that was built originally for crime point
analysis but is being accepted more and more as a tool for a variety of
commercial applications where point based data is required to be
displayed in an aggregated form but not aligned to any boundary based
aggregation.
 
I have attached a copy of a Word document that outlines the features of
HotSpot Detective for you to look at in case you think it might suit
your requirements.
