Thanks for all the help and advice on this, but after trying several suggestions and procudures and having them all lock up, I think it's time to slag the disc and reinstall XP. So on "Hardware Thursday" the little XP machine goes onto the slab and the kites will be flown up into the nearest available thunderstorm, Igor will be sent out for beer, and we'll see what lurches up after the operation...
