I think the problem still is the same. I just think that your Windows has been
setup to hide system files.

If you go to Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View > Hidden Files
and Folder.
Make sure "Hidden Files and Folders" has been selected

You can find your temporary files in this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\PEM\Local Settings\Temp

Replace PEM (my user ID) with your Windows UserID

You can also find a tool that can help you clean up the temp folder here:
Start > Programs > Accesories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup

Subject: MI-L MapInfo Pro 7.8 Failure to Start

All,

I ran into an interesting problem with MapInfo Pro 7.8 this morning, and would
appreciate any comments or suggestions. I am running MapInfo on a Windows XP
platform. When I attempted to start the program, the MapInfo window opens, and
the hourglass icon appears, which is normal. Unfortunately, though, the
hourglass icon doesn't go away, and MapInfo never completely starts. In
previous versions of MapInfo, a common cause for this was an excessive number
of temporary files, which are usually named something along the lines of
"~MAP0001.TMP". Normally, when ten thousand of these temporary files had
accumulated, MapInfo would not start completely, and the result would be the
same as I described, which is the hourglass icon that never goes away. All I
had to do to fix the problem was locate these temporary files and delete them,
and MapInfo would start normally. However, this time, I can not locate any of
the temporary files ("~MAP0001.TMP", "~MAP0002.TMP", etc.) to delete them. Is
there another potential cause that would prevent MapInfo from starting
completely? Thanks.
