Valerie CrimeStat is a statistical tool box that reads MapInfo files and writes MapInfo or esri (shape) files. It is not a GIS system. Among the most useful routines are various forms of hot spot analysis--including adjustment for population at risk, dual and single kernel density models (these make for a very nice cartological display of pattern across and entire region), and the new travel demand model that can model travel patterns from home to another location and summate and predict them---imagine a summation of 1000 mapquest routings for the same region. This module also includes a nice multiple regression routine. You can also download a manual that essentially is an introduction to spatial statistics. CrimeStat 3 does not work with windows 98. Dick
