I have had similar problems in the past. I am using 8.0 now and it is still happening. Save early and Save often. I try to save my workspace before toggling back and forth between layout and map. If it happens more than once on the same file, reboot the machine, that seems to help. There is usually no warning when the freeze happens. I know this is not much help, just adjustments that I have made to minimize the time lost when you have to start all over after MI locks up.
