Thanks to all who responded. The following is the info I recieved: For 1:50,000 PNG Coastline, you can download from the UPNG Remote Sensing Centre at: http://gis.mortonblacketer.com.au/upngis/downloads.htm the coastline file is in MapInfo format - 13 MB in size.
You could try the aeronautical mapping which is 1:1M I know that the Orrs at Mission Beach have produced a CD of the data at a reasonable price ($125), or you can get some of the themes for free and translate it. I did some maps of PNG on an A0 page at one point using this data, and it looked pretty good. http://www.orrbodies.com/data-sets.html Alternatively you can get probably get some of the torres strait at 1:250K from ga.gov.au. This is free, but you will only get a limited area.
