Hi All fellow mi-listers! I am deeply concerned by these reports on workspace incompatibilities between previous versions and the newly released MI Pro v8. After all, most daily work carried out with MapInfo is built around workspaces. We need them to work as before when we upgrade. The concept is not perfect, but we have learned to deal with troubles arising from moved tables, altered indexes, missing printers and so on. I can also understand that backward compatibility is not always possible, and can deal with that. But these new additions seem to fill no purpose, and if I understand correctly, cause problems even in a pure v8 environment.
I'd like MI Corp to comment on this. Also, I'd like once more to bring up the subject of user beta cycle participation. I have not noticed any public beta version of v8? Why? It seems to me that errors such as these would have been found at once in a beta phase. I was once involved in the beta test of the localized swedish version, but it has been many years now since I was invited to test and give feedback on that. And if I look a little ahead, at the next version of MapInfo Pro, I see project Grande, the completely new codebase on the .NET platform. Will MI Corp go ahead with this version as well with no public beta and requesting no user feedback? They must understand that users are reluctant to upgrade their working software, if there seems to be no real added value, and even less so if word gets out that the new version is buggy. Recently, AssetMetrix conducted a study that showed that Win 2000 is still used in 48 percent of business PCs during the first quarter of 2005. Who needs XP? No comparison otherwise, but who needs v8.NET? Especially if we are not invited to take part in the process of creating it. Checking it with a text editor shows that after the "Open Table" statements, MapInfo is inserting "Add Column" statements and populating it with values from my table (Note that the column already exists and has these values!). In some instances, it has stuffed up the quotes as follows: Add Column "Meekatharra_Project" (Expr1 Char (50)) Values "P 51/1808 May 12","M 51/504 September 1","M 51/521 December 6","P 51/1764 July 7","P 51/1809 March 10","P 51/1808 Anyway, the point is, these "Add Column" statements are not necessary, were not present in previous versions of my workspace, and just add gobbly-gook to the workspace file. Needless to say, until a patch is available from MapInfo, I have to manually delete these lines. Then my workspace opens as usual. Regards, Bill
