Hi Peter,
The resource block system is described here: www.routeware.dk/notes.html
Each object has a byte describing the brush, a byte for the pen etc.
depending on what is relevant (lines don't have brush styles for instance).
See the object definition block for a description of this.
So you can have more than 255 combinations, but only 255 brushes, 255 pens
etc.
A bit of low-level programming should be able to extract the information
from that block, but I have never tried. I have only been working on block
0-1-2-3.
Kind regards

Wauw, this was new information to me. Never actually thought about how this
information was stored before, and I never imagined that there would be a
limit to the number of possible styles per table.
Uffe, would you know if the style for regions (Pen+Brush) is stored as a
single style or as two separate styles in the resource block ? If the later
then you could actually only have 127 different region styles, if they vary
in both pen and brush.
This also explains why MapInfo very fast can figure out the styles used in a
table !
What other information is stored in this resource block ? Is there some way
to get the information from the resource block ?

Small correction for those into the details:
The .MAP file has a list of a maximum of 255 different styles (the "resource
block") and for each object there is a pointer to that list. So if you ever
try to create more than 255 styles in the same table, you should run into
problems. If anyone has tried this, it would be interesting to hear about
it.

There is no "default". In MapInfo tables, each object has its own styles.
The styles are stored in the .MAP file with each object.
Hope this helps
