Hi Bill,

Usually, Windows programs are "installed" onto a PC as opposed to "copied".
This implies that all sorts of items are copied to many different locations
on the PC (Windows/System, Documents&Settings, ProgramFiles etc.), plus a
number of registry keys are added to the registry.

This makes it hard if not impossible to use the "copy" approach, as would be
the case with a USB flash drive.

However, I'm sure that by painstakingly moving all necessary parts into a
single tree (including updating the registry to reflect this), and exporting
the relevant registry information into a REG file to be run on each PC one
uses, it would be theoretically possible to run MapInfo Pro from a flash
drive.

However, even then you'd probably need to run it on the same OS as it was
originally intended for, since both the common repository and the registry
organization may differ between OS'es.

And yes, the flash drive drive letter is an issue, but that isue can be
solved using the good'ole DOS command "subst" :-)

But I'm sure it's very hard work, so I wouldn't recommend it unless it's
very important to you. It is a novel idea though.

Best regards / Med venlig hilsen
Lars V. Nielsen

Subject: MI-L : MapInfo on a USB Flash Drive?

Is it possible to load and run MapInfo from a USB flash drive?

The reason I ask is because I'll be travelling overseas for five weeks (in a
few months) and would prefer to just take a USB drive loaded with a working
version of MapInfo and my important client data, rather than lugging around
a 3 kg laptop.

That way, I could check my emails and attend to any client requests on the
road.

Would there might be issues relating to the Windows OS that the drive is
plugged into?

Any thoughts, comments or experiences in this area?

Thanks,

Bill
