I came across this issue a while ago, and it seems that you can't print translucent images to a post-script driver. I use a HP DesignJet 5500ps plotter. My solution was to install a second driver for the same printer, except it was a non-post-script driver (downloaded from the HP website). Sure enough, my translucent images printed without a hitch!
