Thanks to all those who responded to my plea for help. A special thank you
to Jacques Paris.
I eventually found the answer on Jacques Paris' website at

Starting again from scratch and using Font Creator I followed the procedure
explained by Jacques and finally got my symbol to appear in MapInfo.  I'm
still not sure what I was doing wrong originally and I'm not sure if I'm
prepared to go through all the angst again but right now the sun is shining
once more.
