Ahem ... some conflicting statements here, and some assumptions which
called for a small investigation.
Also, at this point I would like some feedback from MI Corp to set the
record straight:

Meanwhile, I ran a test with three pdf engines, on two Mapinfo releases
and for two resolutions.
I used the same layout for all tests, to an A0 portrait (841*1189 mm) with
no raster image, only vector data.
I run an IBM Intellistation with dual Xeon processors and 1.5 GB RAM so
platform perfomance should be no issue. These are my findings:

MI ver and PDF engine 300dpi 1200dpi
MI Pro 7.8 swedish
Adobe 6 OK Blank page
PDFCreator 0.8.0 OK Blank page
Pdf995 7.5s OK Blank page

MI Pro 8.0 eval
Adobe 6 OK Error message
PDFCreator 0.8.0 OK Error message
Pdf995 7.5s OK Error message

The error message in version 8.0 reads:
Error: Unable to print because printer dimensions are too large. Try
decreasing the print resolution or page size. Please consult the printing
guide provided on the CD to maximize your printing capability.

I have not had the time to test at which point the printer engine fails,
but 300 dpi gives about 14 000 pixels and 1200 dpi about 56 000 pixels on
1189 mm.
I tried just one combination in 600dpi, the Pdf995 engine in MI 7.8 which
worked. This would have given 28 080 pixels.

This test convinces me that there is in fact some pixel or other size
limitation, and that the limit exist in either MI Pro or in the printer
engine. As MI Corp have acknowledged a hard coded pixel limitation before,
it ir reasonable to assume that there still is a limit in MI Pro, and that
the only difference in v8.0 is a warning that the printout will fail.

At last another point: Mr Mathieu claims that lowering the resolution is
not an option because the PDF will not be printed to hardcopy. I assume he
means that they are to be used on screen only, in which case any
resolution above 100 dpi is lost anyway.

Hälsning / Best regards Mats.E

RE: MI-L Another PDF map printing query

Well, I've had a few suggestions made... all of which involved putting
the resolution down to 300 DPI or less.

Which is just not an option for the maps I was trying to produce.

So, I've gone and chalked up a victory for the little guys (no offense
meant) and gone back to PDF995. I will pay for the registration out of
my own pocket as the support desk doesn't like "unsupported" software,
but, to put it frankly, stuff 'em.

No hassles with "licenced" fonts, no BS about files being too big, just
print and DONE.

Kudos to PDF995, and to Adobe... Well, my opinion of you now ranks right
up there with my opinion of Microsoft.

Cheers

Mat

Subject: MI-L Another PDF map printing query

Ahhh, I just LOVE Adobe PDF writer!

It's SOOOO much better than PDF995... Really... Honest...

Ok, now my problem is this: when I try to print off large (A1 or bigger)
PDF maps, Adobe "Clips" my resultant map because it's more than 28,000
pixels.

Long story short - I can't find any "I don't care how big it is, just
make the darn map already!" option in any of the menus.

I know it's an Adobe thing rather than Mapinfo, but since you guys seem
to know pretty much anything I come up with I thought I'd ask you lot
first...

Cheers

Mat
