Hi Kara I had extremely good results using MapText on streets. However, as Phil correctly mentioned, I created different static text for different scales. On a country level (Tele Atlas on Switzerland, about 600'000 streets, creating millions of label objects) clearly it took a few hours ... So if your data does not change too often, I'd go for static.
