Tim,

It actually does this check some at least some extent. I just saved a workspace
in MapInfo 8.0 and it was marked as 5.5.
This mark is not (just) to convince you to upgrade, but simply to prevent
MapInfo from trying to open a workspace containing MapBasic commands that it
can't understand.

The problem with the versions is often connected to raster layers or printer
settings. So if you turn of the preference for saving printer settings to your
workspace and if you don't work with raster layers, you'll often see that your
workspace are saved as version 5.5

MapInfo has an annoying habit of sticking the version number of the current
product into Tables, Workspaces, MB programmes, etc. Thus you will find the in
the first couple of lines of the .wor a statement of the version number, e.g.
MapInfo Version 8.0. In most cases just changing the number to e.g. 6.0 instead
will solve the problem. So far as I can see this is to encourage you to
upgrade. It would be more helpful if it made the version the oldest that was
compatible.

Subject: MI-L Workspace backwards compatibility 6.5 > 6.0> 5.5

I have 76 workspaces which have been edited in MapInfo v6.5. Some of these fail
to open on my client's PC, which has either version 5.5 or 6.0 (I'm waiting for
confirmation of which). The workspaces shouldn't contain any functionality
which is not supported by the earlier versions of MapInfo.

My questions are:
a) What will need to be changed to get the workspaces to open in the earlier
versions? (I know that printer settings will need to be removed)
b) Is there an easy way to do this? eg is there a "save as earlier version" mbx
out there?

Yours hopefully
